Abhyangam is a traditional and time-honored Ayurveda full-body oil massage therapy that promotes deep relaxation, rejuvenation, and holistic healing. Rooted in the ancient principles of Ayurveda, Abhyangam is more than a massage—it is a therapeutic ritual designed to balance the body, mind, and spirit.
In this therapy, warm, medicated herbal oils are generously applied all over the body and massaged in a systematic manner by one or two trained Ayurveda therapists. The selection of oil and massage technique is used according to the individual’s Prakriti (body constitution), Vikriti (current imbalance), age, season, and health condition, ensuring maximum therapeutic benefit.
Abhyangam works by nourishing the body tissues (Dhatus), improving circulation, stimulating the lymphatic system, and pacifying aggravated Doshas, especially Vata Dosha, which is responsible for pain, dryness, stiffness, anxiety, and degeneration. The warm oil penetrates deep into the skin layers, helping to remove toxins (Ama) and improve cellular nourishment.
The rhythmic and synchronized massage strokes calm the nervous system, enhance blood and lymph flow, and activate vital energy points (Marma points), supporting natural healing and vitality.
Udwarthanam is a dry, friction-based therapy primarily aimed at reducing Kapha dosha and excess meda dhatu (body fat). Unlike oil massage, this treatment uses dry or minimally oiled herbal powders to create heat and stimulation in the body. The strong upward strokes help break down subcutaneous fat, improve circulation, and remove toxins from the tissues.
